How to Export Bookmarks from Google Chrome
Google Chrome can export every bookmark in your current browser profile to a single HTML file. You can keep that file as a backup, import it into another Chrome profile, or move the bookmarks to a different browser. For a smaller selection, Export Bookmarks Chrome can export individual links or chosen folders.
The built-in export is available in desktop Chrome. It exports the complete bookmark collection for the profile you currently have open, including folders and bookmarks from the bookmarks bar and other bookmark folders.
Export Chrome bookmarks to an HTML file
Follow these steps on a desktop or laptop:
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Bookmarks and lists.
- Select Bookmark manager.
- In Bookmark Manager, click its three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Export bookmarks.
- Choose where to save the file, change the file name if needed, and click Save.
Chrome creates an HTML file containing your bookmarks. The default file name normally includes the word bookmarks and the current date.
You can also open Bookmark Manager directly by entering chrome://bookmarks in Chrome's address bar. The export command is in the three-dot menu on that page.
What Chrome exports
The HTML file contains the bookmark titles, destination URLs, and folder structure from the current Chrome profile. It is a bookmark transfer file rather than a full Chrome backup.
It does not include your browsing history, passwords, cookies, extensions, open tabs, or most browser settings. If you need those items on another device, use the relevant Chrome sync or export feature separately.
Before deleting bookmarks or resetting a profile, keep the exported file until you have confirmed that it opens or imports correctly.
Export only selected Chrome bookmarks
Chrome's built-in command exports the complete bookmark collection. It does not offer a checkbox for individual links or a command to export only one chosen folder.
If you need a smaller file, Export Bookmarks Chrome can export a single folder, selected folders, specific links, or the full collection. It can produce browser-import HTML or JSON. Use HTML when you want to import the result into Chrome or another browser.
Selective export is useful when you are sharing a project folder, moving only work bookmarks, or avoiding unrelated personal links in the exported file.
Import the HTML file into Chrome
To restore or transfer the bookmarks:
- Open Chrome on the destination computer or profile.
- Click the three-dot menu.
- Select Bookmarks and lists.
- Select Import bookmarks and settings.
- Choose the option to import from an HTML file.
- Select the bookmark file and complete the import.
You can also open Bookmark Manager, use its three-dot menu, and select Import bookmarks.
If the destination profile already contains bookmarks, Chrome normally places the imported items in a new Imported folder. If the profile has no existing bookmarks, the imported items may appear on the bookmarks bar.
Export bookmarks from another Chrome profile
Chrome keeps bookmarks separate for each local profile. If you use more than one profile, switch to the profile you want before opening Bookmark Manager. Repeat the export for each profile that contains bookmarks you need.
The profile avatar near the upper-right corner shows which profile is open. Checking this first prevents you from exporting the wrong bookmark collection.
Can you export Chrome bookmarks on a phone?
Chrome's standard HTML export workflow is a desktop feature. On Android or iPhone, sync the bookmarks to the same Google account in desktop Chrome, then create the HTML export from the desktop browser.
Allow sync to finish before exporting, and check Bookmark Manager to make sure the mobile bookmarks are present.
Check the file before sharing it
An exported bookmark file does not contain passwords, but its titles, URLs, and folder names can still reveal private information. A full export may include account pages, internal work tools, client systems, or old folders you forgot about.
If you intend to send the file to someone else, review it first. When only a subset is needed, a selective export is safer and easier for the recipient to use.
Summary
For a complete Chrome bookmark export, open Bookmark Manager and choose Export bookmarks from its three-dot menu. Chrome saves the collection as an HTML file that can be imported into Chrome and other browsers. Use a selective exporter only when you need individual bookmarks or particular folders rather than the entire profile.
