How to Export Bookmarks from Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox can export all bookmarks from the current profile to an HTML file. That file can be stored as a portable backup or imported into Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge, and other browsers that accept bookmark HTML files. For a smaller selection, Export Bookmarks for Firefox can export chosen bookmarks or folders.

Firefox performs this export from the Library window on a desktop or laptop.

Export Firefox bookmarks to HTML

Follow these steps in desktop Firefox:

  1. Open the Firefox application menu using the three-line button.
  2. Select Bookmarks.
  3. Select Manage bookmarks at the bottom of the panel.
  4. In the Library window, click Import and Backup.
  5. Select Export Bookmarks to HTML.
  6. Choose a folder and file name. Firefox uses bookmarks.html by default.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Close the Library window when the export is complete.

The saved HTML file contains your bookmark titles, URLs, and folder organization. You can open it in a browser to inspect the links or import it into another browser.

Export only selected Firefox bookmarks

Firefox's built-in HTML command exports the whole bookmark library. It does not provide a selection screen for exporting just a few links or a particular folder.

If you only need part of the library, Export Bookmarks for Firefox provides a selective-export option. This can be useful for sharing one project folder, moving only work bookmarks, or creating a file that excludes personal links.

When the destination is another browser, choose a browser-compatible HTML export. Keep any Firefox-specific backup separately if you also want a recovery copy for Firefox itself.

Firefox HTML export versus bookmark backup

The Import and Backup menu contains both export and backup commands, but they serve different purposes.

  • Export Bookmarks to HTML creates a portable file for transferring bookmarks to another browser or computer.
  • Backup creates a Firefox bookmark backup in JSON or compressed JSONLZ4 format for restoring inside Firefox.

Restoring a Firefox backup can replace the bookmarks currently in the profile. Importing an HTML file adds its bookmarks instead, which is usually preferable when you want to combine two collections.

Neither format is a complete Firefox-profile backup. Passwords, browsing history, cookies, extensions, open tabs, and preferences are separate browser data.

Import an HTML bookmark file into Firefox

To import the file later:

  1. Open the Firefox menu.
  2. Select Bookmarks, then Manage bookmarks.
  3. Click Import and Backup in the Library window.
  4. Select Import Bookmarks from HTML.
  5. Choose the saved HTML file.
  6. Check the bookmark folders after the import finishes.

Imported bookmarks are added to the existing library. If the bookmarks toolbar is not visible afterward, open the Firefox menu, choose More tools, then Customize toolbar, and set the Bookmarks Toolbar to display.

Export bookmarks from a different Firefox profile

Bookmarks belong to the Firefox profile that is currently open. If you maintain separate personal and work profiles, open each one and export it separately.

Confirm the active profile before exporting so the file contains the expected collection. Give each export a descriptive file name if you are saving more than one.

Can you export Firefox bookmarks on mobile?

Firefox's HTML export procedure is intended for desktop Firefox. On Android or iPhone, use Firefox Sync to make the mobile bookmarks available in a desktop Firefox profile, then export the HTML file from the desktop Library window.

Wait for synchronization to complete and confirm that the mobile bookmark folder is visible before creating the export.

Review the export before sharing it

Bookmark HTML files do not include saved passwords, but they can expose sensitive titles, URLs, and folder names. Review the file before sharing it, particularly if the library includes internal company tools, client pages, financial services, or private projects.

If another person only needs one collection, exporting a selected folder is more appropriate than sending the entire Firefox library.

Summary

For a complete Firefox export, open Manage bookmarks, select Import and Backup, and choose Export Bookmarks to HTML. Use the resulting HTML file to transfer bookmarks between browsers. Use Firefox's backup command for Firefox-only recovery, or a selective exporter when you need only certain bookmarks or folders.
